Things You May know about Bahuda Jatra
Bahuda Jatra, also known as Bahuda Yatra or the Return Journey, is an important event that takes place as part of the Ratha Yatra festival in Puri, Odisha, India. It is the second leg of the annual procession of Lord Jagannath, his sister Subhadra, and his brother Balabhadra.
After the grand Ratha Yatra, where the deities are taken from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, they stay there for a few days. Bahuda Jatra marks the return journey of the deities from the Gundicha Temple back to their original abode in the Jagannath Temple.
The festival takes place on the tenth day of the Ratha Yatra, known as Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya, which usually falls in June or July. The rituals and preparations for Bahuda Jatra begin early in the morning. The chariots are decorated, and the deities are adorned with new outfits and jewelry.
Thousands of devotees gather in Puri to witness and participate in the grand procession. Just like during Ratha Yatra, devotees pull the chariots with ropes, while others sing devotional songs, dance, and play musical instruments. The atmosphere is filled with enthusiasm, joy, and devotion.
The return journey from the Gundicha Temple to the Jagannath Temple covers the same distance as the initial procession. The chariots move through the streets of Puri amidst the chanting of hymns and the sound of cymbals and drums. The procession follows the same route but in the opposite direction.
The Bahuda Jatra holds immense significance in Hindu mythology. It is believed that during this journey, the deities visit the Mausi Maa Temple, which is the residence of their aunt. They receive her blessings and partake in a special ritual known as Adhar Pana. Adhar Pana is a drink made of cheese, butter, banana, and various aromatic spices, which is offered to the deities as a refreshing drink during their return journey.
Bahuda Jatra is an occasion of great devotion and celebration. It signifies the successful completion of the Ratha Yatra and the homecoming of Lord Jagannath, Subhadra, and Balabhadra. Devotees consider it an auspicious and blessed event, and it is celebrated with immense fervor and devotion not only in Puri but also in other parts of Odisha and across the world where Jagannath temples exist.
