Ratha Yatra is a Hindi Festival also known as the Festival of Chariots, It is a major Hindu festival celebrated primarily by devotees of Lord Jagannath (a form of Lord Krishna), his sister Subhadra, and his brother Balabhadra. The festival is celebrated every year in the city of Puri, located in the eastern state of Odisha, India. Ratha Yatra is one of the oldest and most significant festivals in the Hindu calendar and Hindu Peoples.
The word “Ratha” means chariot, and “Yatra” refers to a pilgrimage or procession. During Ratha Yatra, large and elaborately decorated chariots carrying the deities are pulled through the streets by devotees. The main chariot, known as the Nandighosa, is for Lord Jagannath and is the largest of the three chariots. The chariots for Subhadra and Balabhadra are called Taladhwaja and Darpadalan, respectively.
The festival usually takes place in the month of June or July and lasts for about nine days. Prior to the main procession, there were various rituals and ceremonies held at the Jagannath Temple in Puri. The deities are traditionally believed to leave the temple and travel to the Gundicha Temple, located about three kilometers away. This journey is considered a symbolic visit by Lord Jagannath to his birthplace.
On the day of the procession, thousands of devotees gather in Puri to witness and participate in pulling the chariots. The ropes used to pull the chariots are considered sacred, and it is believed that by touching or pulling the ropes, one can attain blessings and good fortune. The sight of the towering chariots moving through the streets amidst chanting and music creates an atmosphere of great joy and devotion.
The procession covers a distance of about three kilometers from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. It is a grand spectacle as devotees enthusiastically pull the chariots while singing devotional songs and dancing. The procession is accompanied by musicians, dancers, and various religious rituals.
Once the chariots reach the Gundicha Temple, the deities are placed there for a brief period, and devotees have the opportunity to offer prayers and seek blessings. After a few days, the deities are brought back to the Jagannath Temple in a similar procession known as the Bahuda Yatra.
Ratha Yatra is not only celebrated in Puri but also in many other parts of India and around the world wherever there are significant Jagannath temples. It is a festival that promotes unity, devotion, and spiritual upliftment, bringing people from different backgrounds and communities together in celebration.
Ratha Yatra has gained international recognition and attracts a large number of tourists and pilgrims every year. It is a vibrant and colorful festival that showcases the rich cultural heritage and religious fervor of the people of Odisha.
